Mawlud: Azzawia, Cape Town, 3 January 2015

THE annual mawlud, the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad's birth, was celebrated at the Azzawia in Cape Town for the 95th year. The mawlud - despite being inexplicably condemned by Saudi-influenced Salafi-Wahhabis as sinful unbelief, contemptible innovation and idol worship - has been an event on the mainstream Muslim calendar for over 1,000 years.

During the commemoration people recite poetry that reminds them of the Prophet's life and pass blessings upon him. The mawlud is marked by dignity and peace. Shaikh Seraj Hendricks, one of the imams at the Azzawia, spoke about prophetic qualities such as mercy, compassion and the intellect.

On the following afternoon a mawlud was held for the women where Shaikh Ahmad Hendricks officiated.
